Micheal Jackson
To what extent can Michael Jackson's Billie Jean Music Video be seen as an example of intertextuality?
Intertextuality is the representation of one form of media text referenced in another form of media. In the music video there are many references in the video which shaped the video. For example, the music video has a fantasy element in it with the artist turning into animals and into thin air. Another example of this is at the start of the music video when the artist throw a coin into a homeless mans pot to collect change, the pot then starts to glow and then the homeless man suddenly changes into a white suit. This isn't something that is normal to happen, showing that it is a fantasy element to the music video.
Another example of showing intertexuality is the detective character being stereotyped by the choice of how to represent the character. The outfit chosen represents a stereotypical detective, for example the black leather shoes, long trench coat, hat, sunglasses and the moustache represents a stereotypical detective. Not only the look of the detective, the actions as well show the detective lurking in the shadows and the streets and also smoking a cigarette. The time setting of the music video also helps represent a stereotypical detective as well by having it at night, helps the detective lurk around the music video without being spotted. This all ties in with the approach of genre of this music video which is clearly a take on a noir film. The dark lighting backs this as well as the detective as well. The setting backs this as well with a take on a city setting.
Intertexuality is being shown by another genre as well of a gangsta feels to the music video. This can be seen being represented by Michael walking the streets with his jacket thrown over his shoulder holding it whilst flipping a coin in his free hand. This is referred too by gangstas in the 1930s.
